PRSSA hosted guest speaker Brian Basilico during their weekly meeting on Tuesday, March 1. Basilico is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer as well as published author. His most well known book is, “It’s Not About You, It’s About Bacon.”
Basilico started the presentation with a short clip about bacon. This video served as the introduction for a presentation based mostly from his book. Basilico shared his knowledge of using social media as a medium for relationship marketing and social networking. The goal of the presentation was ensuring that the attendees would leave with three simple truths about the use of social media.
The first truth of social media covered by Basilico was the idea that people do business with people. According to Basilico, the idea of people do business with businesses is not completely correct. In order to do business successfully with people, Basilico listed three essential steps. He said, “Know somebody, like somebody, trust somebody.” These are the steps necessary in order to business with people, and you cannot skip any of the steps because like Basilico said, “ It is similar to rounding the bases in baseball and not touching first base.” In other words you would be out.
The second truth covered was businesses do business with people. He told the audience that in order for a company to be successful, it would need to be able to go to where the people were on multiple levels in order to sell. The third and final truth was that social media is a medium and social networking is the relationships built. Toward the end of his presentation, Basilico gave tips to the attendees about being successful in all aspects of the information he covered. All of this information and these tips can be found in his book, “It’s Not About You, It’s About Bacon.”
PRSSA will not be meeting next Tuesday, March 8, due to spring break. The club will be hosting a networking workshop on Tuesday, March 15, and a networking event, Green with Networking Envy, on Thursday, March 17 in the warming house. All students are welcome to attend.
